“Were not doing anything but getting older” personal trainer Joey Smith said. “We need to take care of our bodies now. We live in a microwave mentality. We need to slow down, stop overeating and become more conscious right now.”
As a personal trainer Smith works with clients to optimize their needs and help them get to their ideal body health.
“I don't care how much you exercise,” Smith says. “Unless you have proper nutrition and rest you're not going to get to your ideal body.”
Smith says nutrition-not dieting-and rest are just as important as exercising regularly.
In looking for a trainer, Smith says that clients should look for three things, that their trainer listens, cares about the individuals goals and needs, and is patient.
Smith has been a personal trainer for fifteen years and says that oftentimes the most important thing to think about when getting a trainer is whether or not you get along with them.
“You really just need to find someone you can click with,” Smith said. “Someone may come my way and we may not click. That just wouldn't be a good fit.”
Smith said beginners should exercise at least three times a week for a minimum of 45 minutes or more depending on their fitness ability. He says the standard workout includes 25 minutes of cardiovascular exercise and 20 minutes of strength resistance training using light dumbbells or an exercise band.
“It's important for individuals to do use resistance training to strengthen their core.
The exercise band is a better tool that the dumbbells because it's small, portable and has a variety of exercises that can easily be done at your office or in your cubicle,” Smith said.
He also thinks it's important to stay mobile even if you're at work.
“I would recommend that every 20 minutes you stand up and do some stretching or go for a little walk. You live longer if you stay active.”
Smith offers tailor-made programs for his clients, body composition tests, structured workouts and other services.
